Cajun and Zydeco Music and Dance in the Upper Midwest
 September 2005

SMOKEY HOLLOW MOVED, RENAMED!  NOW “LAKE COUNTRY GATHERING”

Join folks from across the Midwest as they gather for a weekend of music, dance, food and fellowship. The location is the rural home of Art and Connie Brown. Art and Connie live near Nisswa, Minnesota and have a large field for camping and a roomy machine shed for playing, dancing and dining.  There’s lots of room for rough camping (no hook-ups) and meals will be figured out by the attendees either individually or as a group.  There will be a potluck on Saturday evening at 5:30 pm. If you opt not to camp there are motels in Nisswa (the Nisswa Motel and Days Inn Motel of Nisswa).  Please let Art know if you plan to attend (so he knows how many to plan for) or contact him if you have questions. Email him at abrown@brainerd.net or call 218-963-3804.  There are plenty of additional activities in the area. Art and Connie’s house is 5 miles east of Nisswa and 4.5 miles north of Merrifield at the intersection of County Roads 4 and 118 (25709 County Road 4).  We hope to get going Friday evening and wind it up Sunday. If you can’t make it for the whole weekend come up for a day or two. The hot weather and mosquitoes are gone...let’s play some tunes and do some dancing! To be sent a flyer contact CAJUN SPOTLIGHT.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME...

At the Balfa Heritage Camp in April our staff attended a cultural session on the topic of the survival of Cajun French. Mention was made that in times past records labels based in the heart of Cajun County would release Cajun songs with only the English title listed, or with the French title as an afterthought.  Fortuantely the situation has improved since then. We always like it when bands performing Cajun and Creole music introduce each song, giving the Cajun French name of the tune and the performer associated with it. The English name is also useful so that folks unable to wrap their tongues around French can have a name to give when requesting favorites. The quiz this month is an aid to such. Can you match the Cajun French title with the English? Lâche pas la patate!
