The Faux Playboys

Well, we finally found a name. Credit goes to Cindy Plaisance who thought this one up several years ago. At the time we liked the name and even made t-shirts but never really had a band, just a loose group of friends (fiends) who played on some recordings for Target/Lifescapes. So, since we needed a name and we already had t-shirts......

The band is composed of Gary Powell, of the Bone Tones, on accordion, Ted Klotz and Karl Smelker, of the Swamp Sextet, on drums and bass, Greg Fleming-Wolfe, of  WEDG and the Sextet Auxiliary, on guitar and Chris Geller, of the Krewe de Walleye on rubboard.

We play a mix of Louisiana music styles; Zydeco, Cajun, and Swamp Pop with the occasional Swamp Blues thrown in. Zydeco music began as the music of the Creole population of Southwest Louisiana and has added influences from blues, swing, Tex-Mex, funk, rap, hip hop and rock into sound heard around the world. Cajun music also started in Southwest Louisiana. Cajun music mixes the sounds of the French Acadian descendants with the other settlers in the area. More recently it has incorporated influnces from string bands, western swing, and country. Swamp Pop is what happens when kids, who grew up listening to the parents and grandparents playing Cajun or Zydeco music, added Rock n' Roll to the mix. Swamp Blues is the funky mix of blues played by Louisiana musicians. A lot of Swamp Blues came out of the Modern Music studios in Crowley Louisiana. J.D. Miller produced legendary sides by Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, Lonsome Sundown, and Silas Hogan that were released by the Excello record label.
